Good Charlotte

AGES: Joel Madden and identical twin, guitarist-singer Benji, 24: bassist Paul Thomas, 22: guitarist Billy Martin, 21
HOMETOWN: Waldorf, MD
HEAT FACTOR: Good Charlotte's hot-selling CD The Young and the Hopeless lives up to its name by tackling tough topics - like broken homes and suicide - with hard-charging guitars and a little humor. "They come across more real than any of the other bands," says MTV VJ Iann Robinson.
HONOR THY FOREFATHERS: Joel and Benji use their daily late-night MTV video show, All Things Rock, to promote punk pioneers like Social Distortion, Rancid and NOFX. "We let (viewers) hear groups they otherwise wouldn't be able to hear," says Benji. "So many bands came before us."
NOT ALL THINGS ROCK: The last CDs Joel bought were by rap superstars 2Pac, Jay-Z and Nas. Says Billy, "Snoop Dogg is the all-time master."
BOYS AND GIRLS: Fame and good looks don't make relation-ships any easier. "When a girl's Dad is like, 'So what do you do?' and you say 'I'm in a rock band,' you can feel the interferior," says Benji, who is single.
LAST WORD: "We want to give kids something to hope for," says Benji. "If one kid says 'Your CD helped me get through this year,' that's all it takes."
