Aoife and the Ear

By The students at Claire Lilienthal School, San Francisco.

This is an original story that was written & illustrated by a group of children when their classmate Aoife (pronounced eefa), had ear reconstructive surgery.  Her classmates gave it to her when she was having her surgery.  The story is about a little girl who needs a new ear and an ear that needs a new home.  Aoife goes to the hospital, where the doctor puts on the new ear and the two become friends and live happily ever after.  It is an ideal book for young children with Microtia.  It is available through The Conor Leigh Fund (set up by the mother of a boy with microtia who lives in Ireland).  The link is - http://www.conor.ie/microtia_book.php

Everybody's Different

By Allan Langoulant.
This is a great book I saw today at a multicultural children's exhibition for work. I thought it could really help young children understand that everybody is different in some way. They talk about skinny people, short people, tall people, people who wear glasses, people who have a balding patch on their heads, as well as racial differences. I really do think that this book is a great introduction to how others are different in some way and how it's ok to be different.
Highly recommended.

Feeling Scared

By Choices.
Another great book for children who are feeling scared. Through this book they will understand what scared really is and why it happens as well as learning that it's ok to be scared. Another great book for children going into hospital. This was also bought at the RCH Melbourne Resource Centre on Level 1.

Going To The Hospital

By Usborne First Experiences.
This book is fantastic for little ones to understand what happens in hospitals and what will happen to them. I wish I had this before Lachie went in for the 1st stage as my mum picked this up at the hospital resource centre on Level 1. A must to get if you have an appointment with the surgery in mind.
