Phasoula (Grid Ref VD 668453 - OS Map Sheet 22)
Description This is an excellent large clear launch point for paragliders that takes a westerly wind ideally. It is approximately 440m amsl with the main landing fields at approximately 120m amsl. There are also good clear landing fields immediately in front of launch from which it is possible to walk back up to launch. There is also a good steeper launch point for hang gliders about 100m further along the ridge to the north. Launch is on a long ridge feature with a fairly smoothly rounded front immediately in front. Launch faces across the wide Dora river valley, which often produces good thermals. The ridge itself is generally soarable if there is a decent breeze. Even in nil winds it is possible to glide to the main landing fields, which are about 3kms to the WSW and about 2kms south of Phasoula village.
It is easy to top land by the main launch point on a paraglider if the wind is right. There is a flattish area on top of the ridge the size of a football pitch, that is largely obstacle free. Some HG pilots can land here too if the conditions are right. Road recovery from the main landing fields can take a while by the road/dirt track through Phasoula village. Generally if the wind is 250-270 deg and too strong on the coast it will often be soarable and smooth at Phasoula.
New Hazard Warning - Dec 02 There is a large set of wires running up and over the ridge from the valley floor, going roughly west to east and situated approximately 1km south of the launch points. The pylons are clearly visible.
Access Access is good. Although the last 500m is on a dirt track, a 4x4 is not essential.
Directions From Limassol head west towards Paphos. After the turn off for Pissouri continue west and turn off the highway at the Kouklia junction. Head west on the main road towards Kouklia. Turn right into Kouklia village and meander through the village centre following the signs for Dora. At the head of the valley, 6 miles/10kms north of Kouklia on the Dora road and just before the road drops down, there is a track crossroads. Turn left here and take the middle of the three tracks. Follow this track approximately 500m to the edge of the ridge where you will find the launch point.
